What type of stitch should I use for a hand sewn dress?
I’ve only hand sewn pillowcases, so I obviously know next to nothing about hand sewing more complicated articles of fabric. I am about to attempt to make my first hand sewn sundress for my 2 yr. old. What type of stitch would look the best? As a complete sewing beginner I only know how to do back stitching and overcasting, so please be specific with names.
Backstitch or a combination of back stitch and running stitch would be the conventional choices. Backstitch is one of the strongest of hand sewn stitches; running stitch is the fastest, but weak. A common hand sewing strategy is 3-4 running stitches followed by a backstitch, then 3-4 more running stitches, then another backstitch, etc. Here’s a manual of handsewing from the late 19th century — the only real oddity is that what we call backstitching is called simply “stitching” here.
Other than a plain seam, which is probably what you used on the pillowcase, there are a couple of other seam types you might want to learn for this project, both of which are stitched twice and finish off all the ravelly edges — so they’re strong seams, and good for kids wear.
You might also want to learn the herringbone stitch, and its descendent the catchstitch, typically used for hemming. http://www.needlenthread.com/2006/12/video-tutorial-herringbone-stitch_17.html
http://sewing.craftgossip.com/tutorial-sew-a-catch-stitch/2009/05/29/ Makes a pretty, durable hem.
The first seam type is called a french seam: here’s how to do it on a sewing machine — you can do the exact same thing by hand. I’d use running stitch for the first stitching, and backstitch for the second:
The second is a flat felled seam — it’s the one that’s used for the outseams (outside leg seams) on jeans:
If you find that you enjoy hand sewing, the “modern classics” are probably by Sarah Howard Stone, Margaret Pierce and Mildred Turner. Your library can probably get them for you on interlibrary loan if they don’t have them.
About the only other thing I can think of to tell you is to try to keep your stitches small and even. That’s a sign of good workmanship and also helps keep the sewing sturdy.

I need a good community based kids program for my kids to join or help start up. Do you know a good one?
I’m looking to start something for my kids, mainly after school, something a home schooler parents would like so that other families could join them. (I’m not a home schooler parent). I would like them to have hands on experiences in being able to develope small skills to build character and confidence and to be able to help themseves and others. At home skills, tools, car care, any thing related to or around the home including cooking and sewing. Looking for projects but nothing in the way of sports; excepting hiking and camping. Any thing out doors would be great. Also day trips to business “friendly” local business locations, including farms and ranches. I’m a retired teacher and counselor. I live 30-40 miles south of Fort Worth, TX.
Check with the local libraries and Park Districts-they offer such experiences in most areas, especially in the summer months. The Boys and Girls Club and Junior Achievement have regular schedules of such, as well as scouting organizations.
What are some Easy and Beginner sewing projects?
I’m trying to find some beginner projects to do with hand sewing. I’ve done some things with classes at school. I made a pillow and stuffed animal. Now I want to try making clothing, like a jean skirt with ruffles or something simple. Any project ideas on what I could do?

Hand sewing a quilt for kids to make?
I’ve made blankets before but never a quilt. What would be the easiest way to teach a 12 year old to hand sew a quilt?
You might want to look into using a sampler kit that I use to teach students 12 functional hand stitches. There are projects in the kit that reinforce their stitching knowledge, and one project happens to be a quilt patch. This kit is a curriculum that is printed on cotton, color coded and comes with a DVD that illustrates each stitch. You may view the material at:
I have successfully used this particular product for many young students. Good luck!
